Throughout the RETURN intervention:
- Listen carefully to what the patient says
- Avoid giving directive advice or telling patients what they should do
- Use techniques such as summarising to check your understanding
- Maintain an open and engaging manner
Try to listen not only to what is being said, but also to what the patient means.
