This audio recording is of a real delivery of RETURN. You will hear a real interaction between a dental nurse and a patient. Pay attention to the tone of the conversation, the use of open and non-judgmental language as well as the patient-centrered focus.

It demonstrates how to use clear communication, supportive language, and a structured approach to guide the patient. It also shows that there is no script for RETURN. Be led by the patient.

As you listen, pay attention to how the nurse introduces the intervention, checks understanding, responds to the patient’s concerns, and encourages positive behaviour change.

“Being part of RETURN has given me more confidence, and I am much better at talking to patients now. Using the booklets has given me a better use of language and the training helped me to put the patient first and really hear what they’re saying. Even just asking patients what they’re worried about and asking them to think through what can be done to change that is such a powerful thing.
