Behaviour change and dental attendance

Changing dental attendance behaviour often involves moving from:

  • Irregular or urgent-only visits to
  • Planned dental appointments (this includes stabilisation attendance)

This is more likely to happen when:

  • Patients are actively involved in decisions
  • Their individual barriers are explored
  • They feel supported rather than judged

Approaches such as goal-setting, shared decision-making, and motivational interviewing have been shown to support this type of change.
